Words, Words Visit the Website of Terry Bates One of the great components of language is the word. We communicate with other people by means of words. We enjoy the radio listening to words. We read the newspaper and books with words. What would our lives be without words? Open up a dictionary and you will observe many words: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns. You will witness thousands of words created over the centuries. Each word was created for a very specific purpose and each word with individual importance. Each year, our dictionaries are bigger and bigger with new words that we require in our modern world. We need words to construct sentences. Without words, it is impossible to envision language. With words and sentences, we manifest our curiosities and discoveries. What would a conversation be without words? We employ some words many times daily. There are some words that we may use only a few times in a year. Likewise, there are many words that we may never utilize in our entire lives. One of the first objectives of an English student is the development of a basic vocabulary. This should include basic groups of words such as pronouns, nouns, articles, adjectives, adverbs, some verbs, auxiliaries, interrogatives, etc. Also, this vocabulary should also include words that are required in our fundamental daily activities. After acquiring a basic vocabulary, we can start thinking about an advanced vocabulary. This should include more detailed expressions of our daily lives, words related to a higher cultural understanding of the language and terminology related to a personal profession. We cannot forget the importance of correct sentence structure. Sentences are constructed with words. You cannot form sentences putting words in any order you please. Correct language is using the appropriate words within an accepted structure. Vocabulary
